Budget Propane Torpedo Tank

Propane is a convenient, safe, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly fuel that has a wide range of applications. If you’re reading this blog it’s likely that you have decided you want to use propane in your home or business, but what tank size is the right choice for you?

Propane tanks come in a variety of sizes, from small canisters that are ideal for occasional uses such as barbecuing, to large storage tanks that can power your entire home or commercial property.

Understanding how much propane you will be using and how often you will need your tank filled will help you to choose the right size tank, and, in turn, get the most out of your propane usage. Ultimately, using propane will help you save not just the environment, but also your wallet.

Propane tank choices

Here at Budget Propane Ontario we have two main types of propane tanks, which can work for residential or business uses - depending on your needs. So, what are the two types of tanks? Torpedo and Vertical.

Torpedo and Vertical tanks are both efficient and reliable, but the tank you choose will depend on how you plan to use propane and the quantity you will require.

Torpedo Propane Tanks - Torpedo Propane tanks are generally used where propane is the main source of heat. Since they hold more propane than Vertical Tanks, they are used by both residential and commercial propane users.

The large capacity of the Torpedo Tank is ideal for residential property owners that use propane to power the majority of their appliances, or commercial properties such as restaurants that use propane to power their business.

The increased storage capacity reduces the need for winter delivery, giving homeowners and businesses alike the peace-of-mind that they have an adequate supply. These tanks can also be supplied in a green paint, with many homeowners preferring green over white as it allows the tank to blend in with the landscape around their property.

Vertical Propane Cylinders - Unlike Torpedo Tanks, Vertical Style Propane Cylinders are typically used for intermittent and reduced propane consumption. The benefit of these smaller tanks is that they can be placed right up to a building or near a property line, allowing them to be hidden out of sight.

Vertical Tanks are typically white. Some users, however, use a light coloured rust-proof paint to help it blend in with their homes or landscaping.

What size is right for me?

If you are looking to use propane for intermittent uses, such as a barbecue, then a smaller tank will be the right choice for your needs. Vertical Tanks are our smallest options and come in just one size - 420lb.

Approximately 52.5” high with a 30” diameter, these tanks are perfect for reduced uses of propane, but can still help you save money on more expensive gas and electric methods. If additional propane is needed, and you do not want to install our smallest torpedo tank, Four Vertical Tanks can be connected together for a larger quantity of propane.

Our Torpedo Tanks, on the other hand, come in two main sizes - 500 gallon and 1,000 gallon. The 500 gallon propane tanks are good for residential and small commercial applications and are required to be installed at least 10 feet from buildings and property lines.

At around 3ft 10” high and 9ft 10” long with a diameter of 38” these tanks are great for residential owners that want to use propane as their main source of heat and power.

The 1,000 gallon tanks are typically used by businesses and agricultural companies, where a large amount of propane is consumed. They are required to be installed 25ft from buildings and 10ft from property lines and are around 4ft 4” high, 15ft 11” long and have a diameter of 41” - perfect for businesses that want to make that switch to propane, which has proven to be more cost-effective.

Budget Propane Ontario has installation experts that will help you not just determine the right choice of tank, but also the best location to place your tank.
