The average Canadian encounters propane on a daily basis. It is likely what powers that grill in your backyard. It may be the source of energy that heats your hot tub, your stove, your water heater, your furnace, and your clothes dryer. But do you know what is actually inside that steel tank on your property? Here is a look at some interesting facts about propane.
Virtually Odorless:
The smell of propane is one characteristic with which many consumers would say they are familiar. But the smell that one generally associates with propane is actually an identifying odor that is added to commercial propane so that its presence can be detected. Propane (C3H8) has no odor ,but the identifying odor additive makes it safer to use.

• Manage Your Thermostat Carefully - Most of your home’s energy consumption goes to heating and cooling your home. Adjusting your thermostat strategically can lower your heating and cooling costs, while also helping to conserve propane for use in other ways. Before you leave your home, conserve energy by dialing back your air conditioner or furnace. Turning down your HVAC system while you’re gone can help to avoid heating or cooling your home when no one is around. You can do this more easily by investing in a programmable thermostat that automatically regulates indoor temperature.
•Use Less Hot Water- Your water heater is another propane-intensive appliance, so using hot water more efficiently can help you go longer in between propane refills. Using cold water when washing your clothes, taking shorter showers, or limiting dishwasher use can help to reduce the heating burden on your hot water heater. Doing all of this will essentially reduce your propane consumption.
•Cook Efficiently- Finally, use your oven and stove efficiently when cooking meals at home. Avoid doing things like leaving burners on or allowing ovens to preheat for too long. Reducing the amount of time your range and oven are on can help to lower propane consumption, which allows you to accomplish more with every gas refill.

On March 31, 1910, The New York Times reported that a steel bottle of liquefied gas could generate enough power to light the average home for three weeks. This miracle gas was propane. Find out more about its discovery as a versatile and economical fuel.
Propane is Discovered:
The catalyst for that New York Times article was Dr. Walter O. Snelling’s early 1910 discovery that a three-carbon alkane found in gasoline had a volatile presence. This alkane, C3H8 (or propane), is what gave unrefined gasoline its high vapor pressures.
