This miracle gas was propane. Find out more about its discovery as a versatile and economical fuel.

Propane is Discovered:

The catalyst for that New York Times article was Dr. Walter O. Snelling’s early 1910 discovery that a three-carbon alkane found in gasoline had a volatile presence. This alkane, C3H8 (or propane), is what gave unrefined gasoline its high vapor pressures.

Gas into Liquid:

Shortly after Dr. Snelling’s discovery, he and a few of his colleagues developed ways to liquefy the propane gases during the natural gas refining process. By 1911, Dr. Snelling had devised a way to produce relatively pure propane. Two years later, his method of propane processing and production had been patented.

1927: One Million Gallons in One Year:

Annual production levels of propane increased steadily throughout the 1920s, hitting one million gallons in 1927. By 1945, one billion gallons of the clean and inexpensive were produced and used for a variety of applications around the world.

Propane’s Many Uses:

In 1918, propane was primarily used to power a pumpless blowtorch that cut through metals. Experiments and technological advances made over the years have greatly expanded the size and scope of propane’s applications. Today it is used to power vehicles, home heating appliances, refrigeration systems, lawnmowers, hot air balloons, generators, and more.
