In this video, you will learn about propane’s efficiency as a home or commercial energy source. Because propane gas is cleaner, more efficient, and more versatile than other energy sources, it makes sense to rely on it as an all-in-one energy solution. Propane is a wonder fuel, as its versatility, eco-friendliness, and cost-efficiency make it perfect for any living situation, especially those living “off the grid.” Because propane is colorless and odorless in its natural state, it has been given a subtle but distinct fragrance to alert you to leaks. If you ever suspect that you have a leaking tank, there are a few safety tips you should follow to protect your home and your loved ones.
Emergency Valve Shut-Off:
If you smell propane, the first thing you need to do is find the main supply and activate the shut-off valve. This applies whether you have an industrial-sized tank or are using a small cylinder for a grill or other smaller appliance. This is an essential aspect of propane safety, as the leaked gas will dissipate in minutes so long as its source has been eliminated.
Evacuation:
Tell everyone to leave the premises, as a propane leak can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Propane gas is also prone to combustion if it comes into contact with an open flame. Discourage everyone from smoking and shut down all sources of ignition. Do not touch any light switches, as the circuit transfer can ignite a propane fire.

Budget Propane Ontario Explains How Heat and Cold Affect Propane
Posted on Wed, Jan 09, 2013 @ 12:29 PM
Propane is stored in residential propane tanks as liquid propane gas, sometimes called LP gas. As with any liquid, the volume of LP gas changes with temperature. This affects your propane tank in by providing different pressure readings depending upon the temperature of the tank. Budget Propane will never fill a tank beyond 80 percent capacity, because this allows enough room for expansion as temperatures change.
At Budget Propane, our tank gauges are calibrated to an industry standard, and should be inspected and checked every time your propane delivery service visits your home. An accurate gauge helps you know when you need a refill, and helps keep your propane tank extra safe.
In extremely cold temperatures, tank gauges will indicate that there is less propane within a propane tank due to decreasing pressure. The opposite is true when the temperature significantly rises, increasing the pressure of propane in the tank.
As an experienced and well-equipped propane supplier, Budget Propane Ontario uses equipment that automatically accounts for volume variances caused by temperature when refilling propane tanks. This allows a precise amount of propane to be delivered every time.
It is important to remember that your residential propane tank may read less than what you expect on very cold days, even after a propane refill. For example, if you just had 100 gallons of propane delivered, your tank may still show less than that volume according to the gauge. This is because of low temperatures—your tank still contains the amount of propane delivered by your supplier, and you will be able to use it for your appliances and heating.
By the same token, during the warmer summer months we will never overfill your tank in order to ensure that it maintains a safe pressure level. This gives the propane inside the tank plenty of room to expand when the temperature rises.
If you have any questions about your propane tank, gauge readings, or propane delivery, contact us at Budget Propane Ontario 1 888 405.7777 . We can help you understand more about how temperature changes affect the volume of propane inside your tank and your gauge readings.
