Save Energy While You're Away At The Cottage

Save Energy While You're Away At The CottageSpring is here, which means you and your family are starting to think about spending weekends at the cottage (and maybe even weeks once school is out). Why not? The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer and soon you will be able to take full advantage of your home away from home. But when you go away, are you doing what you can, before you leave, to ensure your home isn't using unnecessary power while you’re gone?

If you’re not sure, simply take a look at these 5 tips to save energy while you’re away from your home!

1. Turn Off Air Conditioning

Unless you're leaving your pets at home, there is no reason your AC should be turned on with no one around to enjoy it.

2. Turn off Water & Gas

If you have a propane water heater, consider shutting it off to save energy while you’re away. You can also shut off your water main to be safe.

When you get back home, run the hot water tap for a while before the power and gas are turned on, to make sure the water tank isn't empty. It can damage the unit if the tank is heated without any water in it.

3. Unplug Any Unnecessary Appliances

TV’s , gaming consoles, toasters, etc - can all use up energy even when not turned on. Before you leave, take a walk through your home and unplug any appliances that don’t need to be powered while you’re gone.

Small electronics like electric razors, coffee pots, digital clocks, and cell phone chargers all drain energy when plugged in, so don’t think you just need to unplug large appliances. This not only saves energy, but also eliminates a possible fire hazard if a power surge were to occur while you were away.

4. Lighting Timers

Leaving lights on may sound like a good idea to give the illusion that someone is home and to avoid burglary - but it is a waste of energy, and there is another better option.

Using lighting timers will allow you to set certain times for the lights to turn on and off - preventing them from running the entire time your one but still giving the illusion that someone is home and deterring potential burglars.

5. Opt For Propane
