What to Do if You Suspect a Propane Leak

What to do if you suspect a propane leak, Budget Propane, BarriePropane is a safe, efficient, versatile, and eco-friendly way to fuel your home or cottage. But like any fuel or gas, there are basic safety precautions that should be followed in the event of a leak to prevent personal injury or property damage.

There are a few ways you can detect a propane leak. The easiest way is by its smell. Though propane is naturally odourless, manufacturers add chemicals to propane so that it can be detected by smell in the case of a leak. The smell is similar to rotten eggs, so it’s usually very easy to detect.

There are things you should do in the case of a propane leak, and things you should avoid.

  • DO act quickly. Propane leaks can be dangerous so it’s important not to delay in taking action.
  • DO leave your home, especially if the smell of propane is strong.
  • DO call the fire department and your propane supplier.
  • DO turn off the gas if it is safe to do so.

  • DO NOT turn on electronics, lights, appliances, or anything that could create a spark where there is odor.
  • DO NOT light matches, candles, or cigarettes.
  • DO NOT attempt to repair gas lines or appliances yourself.
  • DO NOT turn gas back on or return to the area/building until you are cleared by licensed gas technicians and emergency crew.
