The smell is similar to rotten eggs, so it’s usually very easy to detect.
There are things you should do in the case of a propane leak, and things you should avoid.
- DO act quickly. Propane leaks can be dangerous so it’s important not to delay in taking action.
- DO leave your home, especially if the smell of propane is strong.
- DO call the fire department and your propane supplier.
- DO turn off the gas if it is safe to do so.
- DO NOT turn on electronics, lights, appliances, or anything that could create a spark where there is odor.
- DO NOT light matches, candles, or cigarettes.
- DO NOT attempt to repair gas lines or appliances yourself.
- DO NOT turn gas back on or return to the area/building until you are cleared by licensed gas technicians and emergency crew.
