Switch to Propane and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Posted by James Callow on Mon, Dec 22, 2014 @ 12:06 PM

Global warming.  Oil spills.  Pollution.  Acid Rain.

7Our environment is constantly bombarded with emissions and pollutants that contribute to global warming and air pollution.  Carbon emissions, toxicity and air contaminants, combined with environmental disasters such as oil spills, are creating conditions in our environment that will eventually lead us to an increased earth temperature, higher sea levels, and increased acidity in the oceans.

The climate changes caused by Greenhouse Gases are completely dependent upon our actions today.  Switching to a fuel source with low carbon emissions is one of the first steps you can take to reducing your carbon footprint.

Switch to Propane

Propane is an alternative fuel source that does not produce high carbon emissions.  When compared to other heating options, propane not only has lower emissions, but it is a more efficient heating source with lower heating costs.

Propane is made from the process of refining crude oil and natural gas.  Since it is a light, simple hydrocarbon, it is one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels.  In addition, it is non-toxic, meaning that is not harmful to soil or water and will not endanger the environment.

Propane Facts

  • When released into the air, propane does not release carbon dioxide or act as a Greenhouse Gas.

  • Propane produces less than half the Greenhouse Gas emissions that electricity does while its exhaust creates 60 percent to 70 percent fewer smog-producing hydrocarbons than gasoline.

  • Propane is nontoxic and insoluble in water. Because it's released as a gas, it doesn't spill, pool, or leave a residue. That means propane is not harmful to soil or water in the unlikely event of a tank leak.

  • Propane heaters produce less Greenhouse Gas emissions compared to electric water heaters.

  • Propane has a lower carbon content than fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol.
  • When properly mixed, propane emits virtually no soot, and low carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen.

While propane is an environmentally friendly fuel option, there are many additional advantages to switching from oil or electric heating to residential propane heating.  Learn more about switching from oil to propane, or read our recent blog post High Efficiency Propane Heaters Provide Huge Energy Savings.
