Don't bundle up or turn up the thermostat. Instead, locate heat loss areas and take advantage of some quick fixes that will keep your energy bill from skyrocketing.

Heat loss areas in your home most commonly include the roof, windows, walls, floors and gaps around doors.

Here's are some quick fixes for winter savings:

Windows

Can you feel the draft blowing into your home through the windows?

  •  Check the caulking to make sure it’s fully sealed.
  •  Install window insulation film to reduce heat loss.
  •  Install storm covers or storm windows and heavy drapes or blinds to block drafts.
  • Open your curtains during the daylight hours to allow sunlight to heat your home naturally.

Doors

Does the sunlight shine through the cracks around your front door?

  • Replace worn weather-stripping.
  • Adjust the door threshold to eliminate any gaps.
  • Install a storm door for an additional barrier between you and the cold.

Floors

Does the wind whistle from below?  Cold air can enter the home through your floors, especially in older homes.  While it may be worthwhile to replace the flooring and insulate, here are some options that will have an immediate benefit.

  • Consider using a filler or specialty caulk in flooring gaps.
  • Buy a rug.   This new design element will help block the drafts.
  • Seal gaps and cracks in the floor boards.

Gaps

Investigate additional areas where drafts can enter your home and make sure to:

  • Remove cover plates around electrical boxes and fill the small holes and gaps with caulking or sealant.
  • Check your exterior wall for gaps around pipes, gas lines and electrical cables.  If the caulking is cracked or peeling, it needs to be replaced.

Roof and Attic

The majority of heat loss in your home will occur through your roof.

  • Insulate your attic access door or access panel and ensure it has a tight seal.
  • Add an extra layer of insulation in the attic.

Heat Source

Now that you’ve eliminated the majority of heat loss areas, you can evaluate the type of fuel you are using to heat your home.

If you are using Oil as your main fuel source, switching to propane will save you money – due to inefficiencies, for every dollar you spend on oil heating, you receive 60 cents worth of heat.  Click here for more facts about oil fuel compared to propane.

Propane is also a more efficient source of heat when compared to electric heat pumps. Propane heating systems have many advantages including energy efficiency, affordability and longevity.  Check out more propane facts here.
