Propane Safety Tips: Understanding Carbon Monoxide

Posted by James Callow on Wed, Oct 29, 2014 @ 01:00 PM

When properly handled, propane is one of the safest fuel choices on the market.

Propane is safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, making it a great choice for residential or commercial use.

While propane is a safe fuel source, you should consider some propane safety steps to protect your family from carbon monoxide (CO).

How much do you know about CO?

Carbon monoxide, commonly known as CO, is a colourless, odourless and tasteless toxic gas.  CO is produced through the incomplete burning any fuel, including propane and natural gas, and can be present when appliances are not operating correctly, or from a venting system or chimney that becomes blocked.

Flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, loss of manual dexterity, and loss of consciousness, are all symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide.  In severe case, CO poisoning causes brain damage or death.

How Can You Stay Safe?

Installing a CO detector is the most important safety measure you can take to detect toxic gas.  Ensure you follow the correct installation instructions and test your alarm once a month.
