Propane Barbecue Safety 101The weather is finally barbecue ready! Although if you read our blog regularly, you know we’re huge advocates of a good winter BBQ! Before you start grilling your favourite meats & veggies, (and yes, even fruit!), you’ll want to brush up on your barbecue safety knowledge to ensure you and your friends and family get the most out of this grilling season while staying safe.

Inspect & Clean

  • Inspect your barbecue components and clean the dust, spiderwebs, or other debris off and away from the barbecue.

  • If fittings, hoses, or burners are worn or rusted, replace.

  • If you see that the BBQ needs any repairs, call a qualified technician.

Proper Storage

  • Make sure you are storing your BBQ upright in a well ventilated area. It should be kept at least 10 feet away from any source of heat or ignition, and away from doors, windows, and cleared from the house.

  • Make sure there is nothing piled up or stored beside or around the BBQ unit that might prevent proper ventilation.

Check for Leaks

  • Brush a commercial leak detector, or a mix of ½ liquid soap and ½ water, over the valves and connections. If you see bubbles rising up, you have a leak and should call a qualified technician.

  • If you suspect a leak, smell propane (a rotten egg type odour), or hear a high pitched whistling noise - turn off the propane and contact a licensed professional.

  • Never check for leaks with a match or lighter.

Using Your BBQ

  • Keep children away from the BBQ

  • If you are using your BBQ on a balcony or porch, ensure you have the authorization to do so and are following by-laws.

  • When using your BBQ, avoid wearing clothing that has loose, dangling bits, that might catch fire.

  • Always open the lid fully when lighting the BBQ

  • Cool the BBQ down completely before storing or covering.

Leave Repairs to the Pros

  • If your BBQ is not working correctly, or you are unable to operate it, contact a qualified service technician.

  • Never modify or repair a barbecue or cylinder parts, including connectors, regulators, valves, burners, and controls.

  • Other than the simple tightening of connections, never try to repair leaks or damage on your own, always contact a professional.

You will enjoy your BBQ and the summer so much more if you make sure to stay safe while using it. And as always, if you have any questions or concerns about propane safety, please give us a call today!
