How Propane Is Made

How is propane madeMany of us know how to use propane, for warming our houses, heating our water and cooking our food.  It is an extremely versatile fuel with many practical applications.  But do you know how propane is made?

Canada is the 7th largest producer of propane and nearly 100% of Propane used in Canada is also made in Canada, with the rest being exported, mostly to the USA.

Propane is produced in every province except Manitoba, Nova Scotia and PEI, with 80% coming from Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

An interesting feature of propane is that it is never created for its own sake, but it's a by-product of other processes.  Creating propane involves separating and collecting the gas from petroleum sources and natural gas sources.  Propane is actually a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining.  Propane is removed from Natural gas (along with butane) to prevent problems in natural gas pipelines.  Similarly, propane is created and removed when oil refineries create gasoline.

Propane is created as a gas, but stored and transported as a pressurized liquid at 177 PSI, as you may notice when you carry a propane tank for your grill you can feel liquid moving inside, but when it is released into air, it changes to gas.
