Budget Propane Tips to Help Your Save Energy This Summer

save energy summerEnergy costs soar when the hot weather hits, and especially in areas like Ontario where the heat and humidity make it difficult to stay comfortable.  If you’re lucky enough to own an central air conditioning unit that runs off propane, you’re already ahead of the game in energy savings.  Propane is one of the least expensive fuels, with a low environmental impact when compared other fuels like oil and gasoline.

It’s easy to run the air conditioning when you want to stay cool, but there are also some simple steps you can take to stay comfortable and reduce your energy consumption.

  1. Use a programmable thermostat so you can easily control the temperature in your home.  Set the temperature as high as you comfortably can - the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your cooling costs will be.  Increasing the temperature by even one degree can have a huge impact on your bill.

  2. Adjust your home’s temperature while you’re away from home.  Don’t worry about wasting energy cooling your home when no one is there to enjoy it.  A programmable thermostat makes adjusting the temperature to a comfortable level easy when you return.

  3. Shade your home from direct sunlight.  Shades, drapes and awnings can effectively block the sun from heating your home.  Preventing the sun from heating your home will make a huge difference in your comfort levels.

  4. Avoid use of ovens, clothes dryers or any other appliances that generate heat.  Try to use the stove top or your barbecue to avoid heating your home.

  5. Turn off your lights during the daytime, and make sure to turn off lights you’re not using in the evening.  Lights in the daytime hours can generate additional heat, and using unneccessary lighting can add extra costs to your energy bill.

  6. Prevent hot air from leaking into your home by sealing cracks and openings. You can also use caulk or weather stripping to prevent leakage around windows and doors.

  7. Take advantage of a cool breeze or cool evening air by turning off your air conditioner and opening the windows. Remember to shut your windows in the morning to prevent the hot air from getting inside.

  8. Replace your air conditioner’s filters on a monthly basis.  A clogged air filter makes your air conditioner work harder, costing you more money.

  9. Use a ceiling fan to help improve air flow and assist with cooling your home when you don’t need the air conditioner.  This is a great option for days that aren’t too hot but are still slightly uncomfortable.

  10. Use a propane-fueled central air system.  Propane is an inexpensive fuel choice that is readily available in throughout Canada.  It can easily be transported to remote areas, making it a great choice for cottages, and has an incredibly low carbon footprint.

Following these tips will help you save energy throughout the hot summer months.  If you're interested in switching to propane, give us a call today for a free propane quote.
