An old oil tank may put you at risk

Have you been heating your property with oil from an old oil tank? If so, you might want to review the tips and risk information below from the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

If it's time to replace the tank or you are interested in the benefits of switching from oil to propane, call us to discuss your options. 1 888 405.7777 We'd be pleased to help you find the right solution for your property and location.

Did You Know?

  • One litre of leaked oil can contaminate 1 million litres of drinking water
  • A pinhole in your tank can empty 1,000 litres of oil.
  • Cleanup of an oil spill can involve everything from replacing the tank and supply lines and removing the soil, to replacing your homes foundation.
  • For safety's sake, it is necessary to take some precautions to avoid an oil spill. Otherwise, serious environmental and financial consequences could result.

The Insureance Bureau of Canada:

Some home insurance policies may cover the loss of, or damage to, your property (house and contents) resulting from an oil spill while others may not. Soil damage is usually not covered. The liability coverage provided by your home insurance policy may cover – up to the limit purchased – any liability you incur when an unintentional oil spill on your property contaminates your neighbour’s property.

1.) Research your oil tank warranty! Find out from your tank manufacturer the different life expectancies on your particular tank and inquire as to the type of tank failures that can occur, and what type of oil tank is best recommended to avoid internal tank corrosion.

2.) Your oil tank is your responsibility. It’s important to know the age and condition of your tank. Have your oil tank inspected regularly by a heating service professional (ask your supplier if this is part of the delivery service).

3.) Conduct your own regular inspections of your tank. Look for signs of external damage to your tank. If you have a metallic tank, then look for signs of rusted lines and pit holes.

4.) To help protect your oil tank lines install a line protector to safeguard against foot traffic, falling debris, etc. Talk to your heating services professional to find out the models available for your tank.

5.) It’s important to know your home insurance policy – what you are covered for and what is excluded. Talk to your insurance representative about conditions and requirements regarding oil tanks and tank replacement, as well as coverage. Don’t wait until an oil spill occurs.
