Copy of NovemberPropane offers a range of energy efficiency and environmental benefits, but one benefit in particular, its "easy storage and portability" makes propane the top choice for all sorts of winter outdoor uses, such as: back-up generators, fireplaces, fire tables, spa /hot tubs, ice fishing huts, and saunas.

With a small propane tank connected to your outdoor appliance you have the freedom to located it where you would like. For example, you don't need to worry about gas lines or power lines to install a fire table down by your dock, or to locate your sauna in the woods at the back of your property. Specially designed propane heaters are popular with ice fisherman, used to heat permanent and temporary ice fishing huts on lakes across Ontario.

Here are 5 ways propane heating is used in winter outdoor applications and recreational spaces.

1 - Back-up generators: Winter storms can cause electrical power outages that can last from a few hours to several days. One way to prepare for that, and to ensure you keep the lights on is to install a propane back-up generator.  One type of generator is permanently connected to your home's electrical system. The whole house generator looks like a central air conditioning unit and it starts automatically when you lose power. When the electricity is restored, the generator stops using propane and turns off automatically.

2 - Propane outdoor fireplaces & fire tables: Many people are enjoying their outdoor space with family and friends throughout the winters, and a propane powered outdoor fireplace is the perfect thing to gather around. Fireplaces are often bricked in and a permanent focal point on the patio, while portable fire tables using a propane cylinder can be move to any safe location - such as down to your skating rink or snowshoe trail.

3 - Propane spa heaters: Did you know that propane can be used to heat your hot tub or spa? Propane gas heaters can be used for in-ground spas, free-standing wooden hot tubs, or portable spas when installed outside of the cabinet.  An important benefit is how fast they heat the water - 1 to 2 degrees per minute versus several hours for an electrical heater.

4 - Propane heaters for fishing huts: Traditionally fishing huts were heated with small wood burning stoves or not at all - but today, there a specifically designed propane powered heaters safe for heating the inside of ice fishing shelters. They are convenient, efficient, and have built in automatic safety features.

5 - Propane sauna heaters: Along with heating your spa, you can also heat a sauna with a propane heater. A specifically designed propane sauna heater, heats a metal plate that holds the sauna stones. Heat is then transferred from the stones to heat the air in the sauna. You can located your sauna in the most scenic location and take advantage of the portability of propane!
