Why Do Propane Tank Gauges Fluctuate in Warm Weather?

Posted by James Callow on Wed, May 10, 2017 @ 04:00 PM

Hot_Summer.jpgWarm weather is coming as summer fast approaches. For you, that means more festivals, camping and weekends at the cottage but, what does it mean for your propane?

Propane is stored in residential propane tanks as liquid propane gas, sometimes referred to as LP gas. As with any liquid, the volume of LP gas changes with temperature. As the temperature cools, propane condenses and as the temperature rises, the propane will expand in the tank.

As a result, your propane tank will provide different pressure readings depending upon the temperature of your tank, which may or may not match the actual amount of propane within the tank.

When there is a significant temperature drop, the propane will depressurize and your tank will indicate that there is less propane in the tank. The opposite is true when the temperature significantly rises. When this happens, your propane will expand, creating more pressure, causing the gauge to read higher than it really is.

As an experienced and well-equipped propane supplier, Budget Propane Ontario uses equipment that automatically accounts for volume variances caused by temperature when refilling propane tanks. This allows a precise amount of propane to be delivered every time.

It is important to remember that your residential propane tank may read less than what you expect on very cold days, even after a propane refill. For example, if you just had 100 gallons of propane delivered, your tank may still show less than that volume according to the gauge. This is because of low temperatures—your tank still contains the amount of propane delivered by your supplier, and you will be able to use it for your appliances and heating.

By the same token, during the warmer summer months we will never overfill your tank in order to ensure that it maintains a safe pressure level. In fact, we will never fill a tank beyond 80 percent capacity, to ensure there is enough room for expansion as temperatures change.
