While we've been enjoying some warm sunny weather in central Ontario through October, as we head into November and December we can expect the first snow falls and the possibility of storms.
Snow storms, high winds, white-outs, blizzards, ice storms - severe weather is likely at some point during the winter.
It's important to be prepared, whether you are using a winterized cottage for the season, or you live full-time in the rural countryside.
Today, we are sharing tips for propane customers from the Canadian Propane Association.
"There are a few things to consider to keep your family and your home as safe as possible, whether you are experiencing an icy storm, a devastating flood, a rare tornado or a fierce wildfire. The key is to be prepared.
#1 Get to know your propane system
If you are not familiar with your propane system, take a few minutes to review it. Identify core components (tank, regulators, meter, piping, and supply valves) as well as any appliance vents. Be sure you know where your gas supply valve is located in case you need to close it in the event of an emergency.
#2 Create a emergency plan
Your family should always have a plan in case a storm hits your area. Keep contact information for emergency services and utility companies, including your local propane supplier. You should also post instructions for turning off your propane, electricity, and water. If you turn off your propane, contact a service technician to inspect your system before turning it back on.
#3 Install a gas detector in your home
This handy detector will notify you if a leak ever occurs. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to installation, location, and maintenance.
#4 Clear 10 feet of space around your propane tank
The area around your propane tank and propane grill should be clear of anything that is combustible or easily ignited (including leaves, brush, vegetation, and rags) and in the cold season, always remove the snow from the path to your tank. Never store or use a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent.
#5 Keep your smartphone charged
Purchasing a propane generator that provides reliable power, during shutdowns or meteorological crisis, can save lives and helps to communicate when everything around fades to black. Keep your smartphones charged to call any service provider when you need them the most!
#6 Inspect damages cautiously
If a storm causes harm to your property, be careful when you assess damage as downed power lines, damaged gas lines, and dislodged propane tanks can lead to dangerous situations. In the dark, use a flashlight instead of candles to avoid combustion in the case of a leak.
#7 If in doubt call your expert-provider
They are not called experts for nothing! Your propane provider, as your utility company, hires professionals expertly trained that should handle any potentially dangerous situations with your home’s systems. If a disaster damages your property, it’s always a good idea to have a qualified service technician perform a complete inspection of your propane system, to ensure no harmful damage was done."
