Propane Safety InformationPropane is a safe and clean burning heating option and has very little impact on the environment but, like any fuel source, it is not without risks and must be managed with care.

One issue you may experience is a propane leak. While they are not common, they can happen and you want to be sure you are prepared. The following will help you understand how to identify a leak and what you should do to avoid a propane fire.

Identifying a Propane Leak Propane is known for having an incredibly potent smell, similar to that of rotten eggs or a dead animal. This is done on purpose. Propane is virtually odourless by nature, so manufacturers add the smell, making it easier for you and your family to identify a leak. Make sure that everyone in your home recognizes this smell so that they can take the necessary precautions.

Sometimes however, it is difficult for people to smell propane. Perhaps they are congested or they have a reduced sense of smell due to smoking or alcohol consumption. Maybe a strong cooking smell is masking the smell of the propane, or there is an unintended reduction in the odor of the propane, known as odor fade.

That is why a propane gas detector is recommended. Even if you can depend on your nose most of the time, having a detector better protects you and your family from the dangers of a gas leak. Similar to a smoke alarm, these detectors will sound an alarm if propane is detected.

What to do if you think there is a propane leak?

When it comes to propane safety, it is important to react quickly. If you smell propane and/or your propane detector sounds, follow these 6 steps.

1. Stop Potential Ignition Sources – While propane has a low flammability range, flames and sparks can accidentally light leaking propane. Immediately put out any flames and do not use anything that could create a spark. This includes lights, phones, or appliances.

2. Leave the Area – Get everyone out of the building or the area where you believe there is a propane gas leak

3. Turn Off Propane – If it is safe to do so, turn off the main supply on your propane tank. Remember, lefty loosy, righty tighty!

4. Call for Help – Once you are safely away from the propane leak, contact your propane provider or your local authorities.

5. Stay Out – Do not return to the building until you have been told it is safe to do so

6. Get Your System Checked – before you use any of your propane appliances, have your entire system checked by a qualified technician, to ensure it is leak free.
