Top 5 Reasons to Install a Propane Water Heater Over Oil or Electric

Posted by James Callow on Tue, May 20, 2014 @ 03:26 PM

The type of water heater you pick not only affects your monthly energy bills, but also your home’s resale value, its impact on the environment, and the safety of you and the other residents of your home. Keep the following factors in mind as you decide between propane, describe the imageoil, and electricity as a means of powering your water heater:

1.) Affordability

Per litre, the price of propane is generally cheaper than oil or electricity. When you also factor in the costs of installing and maintaining your heating equipment and the average lifespan of the equipment, propane proves to be the less expensive option, being about 30% less costly than electricity and 25% less costly than oil. Propane heaters are also less expensive to repair than other types of heaters.

2.) Cleanliness

Using oil to power your heater produces more carbon dioxide than using propane. Furthermore, if your oil tank leaks, it will contaminate any surrounding water or soil. Propane is considered one of the cleanest fossil fuels in existence.  If a leak occurs, then propane gas will not contaminate soil or water.

3.) Convenience

Propane is a highly portable fuel which can be stored and transported without deteriorating over time. It can be used to heat your grill, stove, pool heater, clothes dryer, refrigerator, and air conditioner—unlike oil, which can only be used to heat your home and your water. A propane heater heats water nearly twice as quickly as an electric heater. It’s also extremely durable: Heaters fuelled by propane tend to last up to a decade longer than heat pumps fuelled by electricity.

4.) Safety

Propane tanks, by design, are 20 times more resistant to punctures than conventional gasoline tanks. By law, propane is always stored and delivered by trained individuals. Propane gas is non-toxic and extremely difficult to ignite, removing one of the risks that come with using an electric heater.

5.) Low Carbon Footprint

Propane, has a tiny carbon footprint and is high efficient. It can play a major role in fighting climate change. Burning most fuels used in the world today, from coal to wood, oil, gasoline and natural gas, produces various kinds of carbon that contribute to global warming as GHG’s. Propane has a lower carbon content than fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol.
