How to Handle a Propane Leak

Posted by James Callow on Thu, May 02, 2013 @ 09:03 AM

Propane gas is an easy-to-implement, environmentally friendly, and efficient source of energy to use at home or at work. But, like all fuels, using propane requires the use of a number of basic safety precautions to ensure your health and safety. Here are some tips for how to identify a propane leak in your home and what to do if you suspect you have one.

Signs of a Propane Leak:

There are a number of different ways to identify a propane leak.   One of the easiest ways is by detecting the gas’s scent. Although propane is naturally odourless and colorless, propane distributors add a chemical to the gas a distinct, pungent smell that is reminiscent of rotting eggs. If you notice the smell of propane in your home or workplace, then you probably have a propane gas leak.

Depending on where the leak is located, you may even be able to hear propane coming out of the gas line. Because propane is stored under large amounts of pressure, it often creates a hissing noise as it leaks out of its container. If you suspect a leak in a gas line or appliance, then create a thick soap and water solution and apply it over the suspected area. If bubbles form in the soap, then you definitely have a propane leak.

What to Do When You Find a Leak:

Propane leaks can be very dangerous, so make sure you act quickly after identifying a potential propane leak.  Leave your home right away to avoid propane inhalation or getting caught in an explosion.  Do not turn lights on or off or use any electronics in the home. Grab your cell phone call the fire department and your propane distributor for emergency inspection and repair of your propane system.
