Think Propane Isn’t Green? Think Again — 6 Reasons It Is

  • Environmental Advantages of Propane
Why is Propane Green Energy

Many home and business owners are working diligently to reduce their carbon footprint and implement better choices for the environment. Fuel efficiency and clean energy is at the top of the list. So, how does propane gas fit into a green solution?

“Propane is a low carbon, clean-burning energy source that emits virtually no air pollutants, and is safely transported and used across Canada every day. Compared to other fuels, propane’s utilization helps to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and protect the environment.” Canadian Propane Association

Let’s look at this further. Here are 6 reasons why propane energy is a green alternative fuel.

#1 - GHG Emissions

Propane is recognized for low GHG emissions by Canada’s Alternative Fuels Act. Studies show that propane can emit up to 26% fewer GHGs than gasoline in vehicles, and up to 38% lower GHGs than fuel oil furnaces. Propane is one of the cleanest fuels in existence!

End-use GHG emissions are much lower than gasoline, diesel, coal and heating oil and if you look at the total lifecycle including upstream activities, then propane fares even better..

#2 - Other Air Pollutants

“Air pollutants negatively affect people and ecosystems worldwide. Criteria air contaminants and air toxics contribute to air pollution problems such as ground-level ozone, haze and acid rain; and health problems such as allergies, asthma, skin and respiratory tract irritation, and cancer.”

Did you know that propane emits 60% less carbon monoxide (CO) than gasoline, 98% less particulate matter than diesel and contains virtually no sulphur – which is a major contributor to acid rain.

“Propane emits practically no soot, and low hydrogen and oxides of nitrogen, which are the basic precursors of ground-level ozone, or smog. Burning propane also produces lower levels of air toxics, such as benzene and acetaldehyde, than either gasoline or diesel.”

#3 - Leaks or Spills

Oil leaks are a catastrophe which is why many prospective homeowners view oil heating as a liability they don’t want to take on. In the unlikely event of a propane leak, propane becomes a vapour that dissipates quickly into the air and therefore doesn’t contaminate the soil, or the water table, unlike liquid fuels.

In our next blog post we’ll look at 3 more reason propane is considered clean-green energy.
