Retiring to Cottage Country: Tips to Prepare Your Home

Posted by James Callow on Wed, Mar 05, 2025 @ 02:00 PM

The quiet mornings. The late sunsets. The loons singing. The swirling water splashing up on the shores.

The sounds of your new routine.

You’ve made it: retirement.

Gone are the days of being startled by your early alarm set to start your morning and putting on your “wake up” playlist to begin the early commute to work.

Retiring up North to cottage country is a popular destination for those who want to live a quieter and sometimes more active outdoor lifestyle, whether that’s sitting on your dock watching the boats sail by, or by finding new hobbies in yoga and paddle-boarding.

But when it comes to the finer details of how to prepare your homes and ensure that they are move-in ready, the laundry list of items of what takes priority can sometimes be overwhelming.

Depending on the property, most of those in cottage country are not turn-key or four-season homes. The maintenance they require repeatedly means turning that summer paradise into a full-weather escape, starting with the installation of your homes’ heating system.

Changing or adding a home heating system is a time sensitive situation, as installations are easier in the Spring or Summer months when the ground has thawed and becomes less difficult to work with.

When it comes to home heating in more remote communities, propane is accessible, available and a less expensive solution to other forms of heating. Not only is it in high production, increased supply and generating more demand, but propane fuel also burns cleaner than other forms of natural gas.

Concerned about electrical power outages during intense summer thunderstorms?

Supplying your home with an alternative form of power, such as a generator, allows you freedom of living comfortably and still having access to necessities such as certain lights, refrigeration to keep your food from spoiling, or even whole home generators where you keep everything running through the worst of the storm.

The most common types of home generators use gasoline or diesel fuel to keep a home running through storms, but the cleanest burning fuel you can run your home is propane.

Propane generators are more reliable, cleaner, more efficient and have more longevity than standard forms of gas run generators.

Not only will you be preparing your home and making the move from city to country easier, but you will also be supporting the environment for a greener future by switching to propane.
