Yes, you can transport some propane tanks in your vehicle, but only under specific conditions. Propane cylinders up to 40 lb capacity may be transported inside a vehicle if they are upright, secured, properly ventilated, and taken directly to their destination. Cylinders larger than 40 lb, including 60 lb and 100 lb propane cylinders, cannot be transported inside an enclosed vehicle and must be transported upright in an open vehicle.

With summer bringing peak propane cylinder refill activity across Muskoka and Central Ontario, understanding these rules is important for both safety and compliance.

Why Transportation of Dangerous Goods Matter

Propane cylinders are safe when they are filled, handled, and transported properly. However, improper transportation can create serious hazards, especially during warm weather.

A propane cylinder left inside a hot vehicle can experience increased internal pressure. If pressure builds too much, the cylinder’s pressure relief valve may discharge propane. This can create a dangerous situation inside an enclosed car, van, SUV, or canopy-covered truck.

At Budget Propane, we see several recurring issues during the summer refill season. The most common involves transporting large cylinders inside enclosed vehicles, transporting cylinders not upright and secured in vehicles.

Budget Propane Gravenhurst Propane Refill Propane Cylinder Refill Propane TransportationCan You Transport a 20 lb Propane Cylinder in a Car?

Yes, but it should be transported to its final destination as soon as possible. A propane cylinder should not be left inside an enclosed vehicle for any amount of unnecessary time.

Even when a small cylinder is allowed to be transported inside a vehicle, that does not mean it can be stored there. The exemption is intended for direct transportation, not for leaving a cylinder in a parked car, SUV, or van.

This is especially important in summer. Interior vehicle temperatures can rise quickly, increasing the risk of pressure relief valve discharge.

Once your propane cylinder is filled, take it directly to its destination and remove it from the vehicle as soon as possible.

Can You Transport a 100 lb Propane Tank in an SUV or Van?

No. A 100 lb propane cylinder cannot be transported inside an SUV, van, car, or canopy-covered vehicle.

Cylinders larger than 40 lb capacity cannot be transported inside a vehicle. The TDG Quick Reference Sheet specifically says cylinders larger than 40 lb cannot be transported inside a vehicle and warns fillers not to fill 100 lb cylinders that arrived, and will leave, inside a car, van, or canopy-covered vehicle.

If you need to transport a 60 lb or 100 lb propane cylinder, it must be transported upright and secured in an open vehicle, such as:

    • An uncovered pickup truck bed
    • A utility trailer
    • An open deck or approved open vehicle setup

Why Budget Propane May Not Fill Certain Cylinders

If a cylinder arrives in a vehicle that cannot legally or safely transport it after filling, Budget Propane may not be able to fill it.

For example, a 100 lb cylinder arriving inside an SUV, van, or covered vehicle should not be filled if it will leave the same way. This is not about inconvenience; it is about safety, liability, and TDG compliance.

Customers should plan transportation before coming for a refill, especially for cylinders larger than 40 lb.

Safe Propane Tank Transport Tips for Customers

Before transporting a propane cylinder, follow these basic safety steps:

    • Keep the cylinder upright at all times.
    • Secure it so it cannot tip, slide, or roll.
    • Keep the vehicle ventilated.
    • Never smoke while transporting propane.
    • Go directly to your destination after filling.
    • Remove the cylinder from the vehicle immediately.
    • Do not transport cylinders larger than 40 lb inside enclosed vehicles.

  • Payment is by credit or debit only. The cylinder shed does not accept cash, so please bring a credit or debit card when you visit.
