When it comes to propane tanks for supplying home energy, there are two main types: horizontal torpedo tanks and vertical (upright) tanks. Let's explore these options and find the best fit for your requirements.

Determining the Tank Size and Style:

The capacity and style of the tank you choose will depend on various factors, including:

Estimated propane usage: Consider your heating requirements during the winter season, the size of your home, the number of propane appliances you have, and the efficiency of those appliances.

Torpedo or Upright?

Torpedo Style (Horizontal) Tanks: These tanks have a larger capacity and are typically used when propane serves as the primary source of heat. Their higher storage capacity reduces the need for frequent winter deliveries, providing homeowners with peace of mind regarding an ample supply of propane. At Budget Propane, our torpedo tanks are available in green, allowing them to blend into the landscaping or wooded areas around your property.

For torpedo tanks with capacities ranging from 325 USWG up to and including 1000 USWG, specific installation guidelines apply. These tanks should be positioned at least 10 feet away from property lines, buildings, and ignition sources such as pool heaters or generators. Additionally, the tank must be easily accessible for refilling, so there should be a distance of less than 100 feet between the torpedo propane tank and the location where the propane truck can safely park.

Vertical or up-right style propane cylinders are typically used for intermittent or reduced consumption loads. One benefit of a 420lb capacity up-right tank is that it can be placed right up to a building or near a property line. Most vertical tanks are white, however, you are welcome to use a light coloured, rust-proof paint on your tank to help it blend in with your home's exterior.
