Barbecue season is here, and it's time to gather outdoors and enjoy delicious meals straight from the grill. Before you start flipping burgers and sizzling steaks, it's crucial to prioritize safety to ensure a worry-free and enjoyable barbecue experience.

In this blog, we'll share essential tips from The Canadian Propane Association to help you maintain a safe environment while using your propane BBQ. From preparing your BBQ for the season to following recommended practices and proper steps to turn it on and off, these guidelines will help prevent accidents and keep your barbecue season a delightful one.

BBQ Safety Checklist

Preparing Your BBQ for the Season:

    • Clean your BBQ inside and out, ensuring the burner ports are free of rust, dirt, and debris.
    • Inspect the hose leading from the tank to the burners and replace it if damaged.
    • Test for leaks using a 50:50 solution of water and dish soap on the connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, tighten or replace the part.

Safety Precautions:

    • Barbecues emit carbon monoxide (CO), so only use them outdoors. Never barbecue in enclosed spaces like garages or tents.
    • Don't leave the BBQ unattended or allow grease buildup on burners or at the base.
    • Avoid throwing water on a grease fire; it spreads the flames.
    • Do not use lighter fluid or accelerants on the grill.
    • Keep spare cylinders away from the barbecue and other ignition sources.
    • Check with authorities before using a BBQ on your apartment balcony.

Recommended Practices:

    • Keep children and pets away from the barbecue.
    • Position the barbecue away from wooden fences or walls.
    • Ensure the area around the BBQ is free from combustible materials.
    • Follow safe practices for turning on and off the barbecue.

Steps to Turn On Your BBQ:

    1. Open the lid.
    2. Open the propane cylinder service valve.
    3. Turn on grill/burner valves or heat settings.
    4. Take a step back.
    5. Push the ignite button or use a long match or barbecue lighter through the side burner hole if necessary.
    6. If the burner doesn't ignite, turn off the gas, wait 5 minutes, and repeat the process.

Steps to Turn Off Your BBQ:

    1. Turn off the gas valve first.
    2. Turn off the burner controls to prevent gas buildup in the connector hose.
    3. Allow the barbecue to cool completely before closing the lid or covering.
