Earth Day and the Future of Renewable Propane

Posted by James Callow on Tue, Apr 22, 2025 @ 10:00 AM

With Earth Day being celebrated around the globe, it’s commonly misunderstood that propane is one of the biggest pollutants.

At Budget Propane we honour the idea of being supporters of combatting climate change and investing in a greener future, maintaining our loyalty to doing what is best for our community and remaining customer-focused.

Here’s a fun fact: propane burns cleaner than gasoline and diesel and releases 60 per cent less Carbon Monoxide than gasoline.

It’s lower in emissions and reduces the amount of toxins produced in the air through other forms of burning fuel, meaning we get to breathe cleaner and healthier air, lowering the risk of respiratory disease and illness.

With the focus on fighting climate change, developers are honing a more natural approach to production versus conventional propane methods and are aiming for a future where propane is a renewable energy source.

Here’s how:

  1. Renewable propane is created from raw materials known as “feedstocks” such as animal fats, waste, plants and vegetable oils.

  2. These materials are then broken down and create even LESS emissions than standard propane -- up to 85 per cent.

While it’s still in the smaller stages of production in Canada, the goal for the future is bright: renewable propane is an even more sustainable option to lower the amount of carbon emissions that Canada produces.

It’s more cost effective and a better alternative for those communities in more remote areas and provides more opportunities to better support the economy and the environment at the same time.

Imagine a world where cars and aviation use more sustainable fuel options, reducing the amount of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions affecting climate change and the uptick in milder temperatures worldwide.

Canada is thoughtfully evaluating its role in decarbonization and mapping out a future where we make the important changes necessary to develop a growing industry in renewable propane and production.

In other words, by producing renewable propane we are helping preserve the planet too.

Advancements and technology are rapidly changing to ensure that propane continues to be a sustainable, affordable, and reliable option for every community, even in the most remote areas in Canada.

By switching to propane, you are choosing a safer, cleaner and more sustainable option for the environment, lending the way for a healthier future for generations to come.

This Earth Day, take action and learn about the ways in which you can contribute to the reduction of a lower carbon footprint, and conserving the nature and habitat in Canada that we are lucky to call home.
