Installation Regulations for Torpedo Style Propane Tanks:
Torpedo style Propane Tank (325 USWG up to and including 1000 USWG) need to be:
Propane Tank
A minimum of 10 ft from any building (including garage or a shed)
A minimum of 10 ft from any property line
A minimum of 10 ft from any source of ignition (pool heater, generator, air conditioner)
A maximum distance of 100 ft from wherever the delivery truck could back up to in the winter time
Vertical Style Propane Cylinders are typically used for intermittent or reduced consumption loads. One benefit of a 420lb is that it can be placed right up to a building or near a property line. Most vertical tanks are white, however, you are welcome to use a light coloured, rust-proof paint on your tank to help it blend in with your home and landscaping.

Installation Regulations for Vertical Propane Cylinders:
Vertical style Propane Cylinders (vertical 420 lb cylinders) or propane regulators need to be:
Propane Tank
A minimum of 3 ft from any opening into a building (window, doorway, exhaust vent)
A minimum of 10 ft from any mechanical air intake (direct vent appliances, some vents for cook ranges HRV’s)
A minimum of 10 ft from any source of ignition (pool heater, generator, air conditioner)
Propane Tank Safety
Propane tanks are subject to strict manufacturing standards that ensure they are durable and safe to use. Regulations state that tanks/cylinders must be equipped with pressure relief valves to prevent excessive pressure in abnormal conditions. Tanks are also stamped with information about the date of manufacture and subsequent service and testing dates. It is also required by law that personnel dealing with filling propane tanks have a record of training. You can read more about the regulations here. Propane tanks are also 20 times more puncture resistant that tanks filled with ethanol, methanol or gasoline.
