5 Tips To Prepare Your Home & Cottage For Winter

Written by James Callow | Mon, Nov 23, 2015 @ 07:30 PM

With winter approaching, many of us still aren't ready for the upcoming cold, snow and everything that comes with it.  We've put together a list of 5 simple tips to help you prepare for winter.

  1. Make sure all appliances are in working condition - Be sure to make sure all of your key appliances like water heater, furnace and kitchen appliances are working well.  Being stuck with these breaking in winter can be expensive, unpleasant or dangerous.
  2. Make sure you have an adequate propane supply - If you top-up your propane tanks manually, be sure to fill up early.  This helps make sure you are safe throughout the season and don't accidently run out of fuel and require an emergency delivery.
  3. Prepare an emergency kit - By preparing a kit with days worth of food, water, blankets, clothes, batteries and flashlights you are ready for if a bad storm rolls through and you are stuck in your house potentially without power.  Preparing a similar kit for your vehicle is also advised.
  4. Ensure insulation and seals are intact - Insulation can occasionally shift or move if it's exposed as well as door/window seals, leading to a drafty house which could potentially use more energy to keep warm.  Make sure sealant on windows & doors are not cracked and still soft to the touch.
  5. Inspect your roof and evestroughs - Inspect your roof for any missing and damages tiles and ensure your evestroughs are clear and working.  Water entering through the top of your house can freeze and expand, causing damage and potential leaks during the spring thaw.

There are many other tasks which can be done to ensure you are safe, warm and prepared for the winter.
