Winter is just around the corner and it is time to consider whether your cottage or seasonal home is prepared. There are many items on the to-do list in order to fully prepare your summer home or cottage for the winter months. This includes removing and storing any watercraft, water toys and docks, making sure the property is clear of all garbage, sealing doors and windows - the list keeps going on.

There is, however, one task that should be top of mind and may be missing from your list - refilling your propane tank.

Why refilling your propane tank is important

If you heat your cottage or summer home using propane, you will want to make sure you have enough to get you through the winter months – this will help prevent freezing and bursting of pipes which can be damaging and expensive to repair.

In fact, some homeowner’s insurance policies emphasize the importance of this task, establishing conditions in your policy stating that you, the homeowner, are responsible for making sure that your home heating system is operating properly while the home is unoccupied. This includes having adequate fuel supply (propane tank refilled) and that the heating system is properly maintained.

Your policy may even include that your unoccupied home be inspected regularly in order to make sure that your heating system is working accordingly in order to protect from freezing pipes and/or that water lines are shut off and the lines are drained.

If you are worried that you will run out of propane during the winter, opt for our NEW! Propane Tank Monitor. The monitor will send you weekly notifications, by text or email, to update you on the current levels of propane remaining in your tank. Best of all, it will alert us so that we can schedule a timely fill-up.

Not all insurance policies are versed the same way – so be sure to read through and understand the obligations you may have in order to meet your insurance policy requirements during the winter months.

If you are currently closing up the cottage and need a propane refill, please do not hesitate to contact us - we are always ready to help.

Don’t Forget - During the winter months we ask that all clients sand or salt their driveways and walk-ways, as well as provide a path to your propane tank – this will help insure the safety of our drivers while making deliveries.
