Grill Recipe Of the Month: Grilling Fruit! by Budget PropaneIt’s the time of year again where we start posting our recipes of the month! Each month throughout the summer expect a new delicious grilling recipe on our blog.

When you start up your grill on a nice day, you probably intend to cook more popular BBQ foods - burgers and hot dogs, sausages and chicken skewers… maybe you even throw on some veggies like asparagus, peppers, and potatoes. But did you know that many fruits are excellent grilled, either as a dessert or side especially? You may have had grilled peaches or pineapples, but there are a lot of fruits that taste delicious after spending a few minutes on the grill, and we’ve listed them below!

Peaches
Peaches are probably the most popular grilling fruit - they go perfectly in salads, salsas, and as a sweet garnish for chicken, pork, or steak. To add a whole other level of flavour you can drizzle with balsamic. For dessert, scoop some vanilla ice cream on top of your grilled peaches.. Is your mouth watering yet?!

Pineapple
Pineapple is fantastic on the grill, especially if you use fresh pineapple. You can slice it into rings and toss right on the grill, or you can cube it and slide it onto skewers with sweet bell peppers and chicken breast. If you have a smoker, try pineapple in it as well! The smoky flavours go perfectly with the sweet and tangy flavours pineapples are famous for. Adding a slice of grilled pineapple to your burger will give it that tropical kick you’ve been craving!

Watermelon
Watermelon is not something many people think of when they have a BBQ, but you’d be surprised at the intense sweet flavours that pour from a grilled watermelon. It’s popular as salad, tossed with herbs such as mint  or cilantro, and topped with feta or chevre cheese. Go ahead and leave the rind on, or remove it - it’s up to you! Grilled watermelon goes great with seafood like shrimp!

Banana
Grilled banana split anyone? Peel your fresh ripe bananas, and slice them in half the long way. Coat in a bit of brown sugar, and serve with icecream!

Apples
Apples are one of those fruits that we all know are delicious when cooked! Apple pie, apple fritters, applesauce, apple cider.. Add grilled apples to that list! Cut in half and pit, or slice. Add to salads, salsas, or meat dishes like pork or chicken, or top with ice cream for a classic tasting dessert!

Fruit grilling tips:

  • Don’t forget about your fruit on the grill! Stick close by. Most fruit is delicate and will be ready fast, so watch it closely.
  • Grill over indirect heat. As above, fruit is delicate and can burn or fall apart easily. Avoid putting directly over flame or coals.
  • Brush with olive oil. This will add a nice extra dimension of flavour, and prevent your fruit from sticking to the grill.
  • Don’t be afraid to try other fruits! Strawberries, figs, and cantaloupe are all delicious when grilled! Test out a few pieces of a fruit you want to try, you never know, you may discover some amazingly delicious combinations.

We hope you get lot’s of grilling time in this season! Grilling fruit is a great way to impress your guests, add new flavour dimensions to your family recipes, and get some extra nutrition in your diet! Stay tuned for new grilling recipes and tips each month!
