5 Tips to Prepare For Winter Propane Delivery

bobtail_v2-resized-600Propane delivery in the winter months can be harrowing for the drivers responsible for delivering it. Bad weather and road conditions, combined with inaccessible tanks makes their job unnecessarily difficult and potentially dangerous.

It’s important that you as a customer are prepared to receive your propane delivery so that you get the fuel you need, and the delivery driver can stay safe and deliver on time to you and other customers.

1. Check your levels. Especially before a snowstorm or other inclement weather, it is important to know how much propane is left in your tank. If you are not on automatic delivery you should call to schedule a delivery with as much notice as possible. This way you can ensure you have enough to last you through the storm, and then some, as delivery afterwards could be delayed due to road conditions.

2. Mark your tank. Make sure you have marked the location of your propane tank with a flag, stake, or pole. The marker should be higher than the average snowfall for your area. This will help you avoid the tank when clearing snow with shovels or machinery, as well as let your delivery driver know exactly where the tank is.

 3. Clear snow away from the tank. You should clear any snow from the tank itself, as well as any lines or valves. It’s a good idea to clear snow away from any vents of your propane appliances as well to avoid carbon monoxide leaking into your home. Heavy piled ice and snow  can also pose a risk of causing damage to the tank and its components, so it’s a good idea to keep it cleared in general. Use a broom or brush to gently remove snow, as a shovel may damage the tank.

4. Clear a pathway to the tank. Make sure that after a snowfall, you’ve cleared a pathway to the tank. If the truck normally parks in your driveway, make sure that is clear as well.

If the tank is not accessible your propane won’t be able to be delivered on time, if at all, which could leave you in a position where you do not have enough propane and have to make an emergency call for a refill - which can cost you extra fees. It is better to avoid the trouble and keep the path cleared.

If you have deliveries scheduled to your home or cottage when you won’t be around, having someone able to keep the path and driveway clear can save you a headache later.
