5 Easy Ways To Save Energy This Winter

Posted by James Callow on Tue, Dec 15, 2015 @ 12:54 PM

Winter Energy SavingsWe all want to save energy but when the temperature starts dropping, we worry more about staying warm and comfortable than saving money.  But there are many easy ways to reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfort in your home.  Here are 5 easy ways we recommend:

  1. Use the sun's free energy - The sun has the power to heat up many rooms or the entire home.  If you have south facing windows, on a nice bright day, opening the curtains create a greenhouse effect to heat the house.  When the sun goes down, be sure to close the curtains to retain the heat.
  2. Use ceiling fans -  Ventilation and airflow can dramatically increase comfort levels in your home.  Having a ceiling fan on a low setting spinning clockwise will take the heat which has risen to the top of the room and forces it down and around the entire room.
  3. Get a humidifier - As we all know from a hot summers day, when it's humid out it always makes the air hotter than it actually is.  Humid air holds heat much better, allowing you to retain more heat throughout the day and run the heaters a little less.
  4. LED lights - With great advances in LED technologies, they have become more affordable than ever.  LED lights use up to 90% less energy than regular light bulbs and also last much longer.  These lights are also available in most common sizes (including Christmas lights) so although a pack may be more expensive initially, the savings over the life of the bulb are dramatic.
  5. Get a programmable thermostat - Programmable thermostats learn the way you live in your home, and figures out ways to save you energy. They can drop the temperature a couple degrees at night when you sleep and returning it to regular temperature by the time you get out of bed.

There are many ways to save energy, but we find these 5 are very simple and can make a noticeable difference to your usage.
