4 Tips to Using Your Propane Grill in the Winter

Don’t you find that grilling some foods taste so much better than baking or frying. Nothing is better than a nicely grilled steak and grilled vegetables. Unfortunately, most of us feel the need to put our grills away for the winter months. What if I told you that isn’t necessary?

Winter grilling is definitely a possibility, especially for those of us living in Ontario who endure traitorous and extremely cold winters. Let us share a few of our winter grilling tips with you so you can continue grilling all year round.

1. Bundle-up

Whether your barbecue is covered or out in the open, be sure that you dress appropriately, not only for the weather, but for barbecue use as well. It is important to ensure that you don’t have any loose or hanging articles of clothing on while using the grill. Your will want to make sure that all scarves are tucked securely into your jacket so that is won’t dangle in the flame of your propane barbecue. Another important tip regarding your attire is to make sure you aren’t wearing any regular winter gloves. You will want to be wearing heat-resistant gloves while operating your grill.

2. Top up your propane

Grilling in the winter is fantastic. However, due to the drop in temperatures, your propane barbecue uses more fuel in order to keep the grill warm compared using your grill in the warmer summer temperatures. That is why it is important to make sure that your propane is topped-up to an appropriate amount before each use. There is nothing worse than running out of propane while you are grilling your dinner.

A way to limit the over use of your propane is to use a timer while grilling. By reducing the amount of times you lift the lid of your barbecue, you are more likely to keep the heat in your grill rather than it escaping every time the lid is opened.

3. Safety First

We want you to be able to enjoy the food that your grill, so make sure your work area is safe. Shovel a clear path to your grill, as well as around it and salt the path to reduce the risk of slipping and sliding, especially when you have food or utensils in your hands.

Be sure that you prepare your food and gather your grilling utensils before you begin grilling. Being organized will reduce your time in the cold and limit your risk of slipping or tripping accidents.

Also, be sure that the area you are grilling in is well lit. Our winters have limited day light, and therefore gets dark quite quickly. You don’t want to be grilling in the dark, how are you going to be able to tell if your food is grilled properly?

4. Clean and cover your grill

In order to continue grilling with an efficient propane barbeque all year round, it is important to take care and maintain your grill. Once you are done grilling for the day, be sure to turn off your propane tank and cover the barbecue properly. With heavy snow falls, you want to make sure that your grill is protected and not damaged by snow and ice build up.
